New Museum for Art and Design in Trondheim?

28.05.2025 - Culture and media

Oslo Economics, in collaboration with Bygganalyse, Snøhetta and SYSTRA, has completed the first stage of quality assurance (QA1) for a concept study on a new museum for art and design in Trondheim. The study looks at future solutions for Trondheim Art Museum and the National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design. Their current buildings are outdated, and the National Museum of Decorative Arts and Design is partly closed.

The evaluation recommends building a new museum at Leutenhaven over the alternative site at Dora II—if a large new museum is to be developed. However, several key issues need to be resolved first, especially related to financial feasibility and what to do with the current museum buildings.

There are also lower-cost options that would reuse the existing museums and nearby areas for cultural purposes. However, these options would mean splitting activities across multiple buildings and limiting future expansion due to heritage and sightline restrictions. This could reduce the museums’ functionality and lead to duplication of spaces and services.
