Regional air transport is defined as the air travels subsidised by the government through the purchase of public service obligations (PSO) from airlines. The purpose of the purchases is to assure air services in remote areas. Most regional air transport in Norway is situated in the regions of Finnmark, Troms, Nordland and Sogn og Fjordane. In 2015 the annual government subsidy was 699 million NOK.
On behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Oslo Economics has evaluated the consequences of transferring the responsibility for purchasing regional air transport from the state to the regional administrative level.
