Today our colleague Jon Ellingsen defends his dissertation titled “Essays in prediction, expectation formation, and labor economics”, at BI Norwegian Business School. Congratulations!
The dissertation consists of three articles that all shed light on macroeconomic issues using alternative data or microdata. One article shows how information from news articles, utilizing various machine learning methods, can contribute to creating better macroeconomic forecasts. In the second article, Jon examines how monetary policy, through interest rates and communication, affects firms’ expectations of economic growth. In the third article, Jon uses detailed registry data to investigate how employees in the petroleum industry were affected by the 2014 oil price drop.
