Lung cancer is the type of cancer that causes the most deaths in Norway. In the National Cancer Strategy – Joint Effort Against Cancer, the government has set a clear goal of introducing a screening program for lung cancer in Norway. The Norwegian Directorate of Health is currently assessing lung cancer screening and will propose strategies for organizing a potential national screening program. Screening for lung cancer has the potential to detect the disease earlier, thereby improving patient prognoses.
A professional group appointed by the Norwegian Directorate of Health, consisting of external experts and representatives from patient and user organizations, has recommended the introduction of such a program based on previous research and knowledge about lung cancer screening. The working group has also outlined the advantages and disadvantages of screening, as well as different ways to organize a lung cancer screening program in Norway.
Oslo Economics will assist the Norwegian Directorate of Health in conducting an analysis of the health economic consequences of the screening program. This analysis will be included in the Directorate’s final report and recommendation to the Ministry of Health and Care Services regarding the implementation of a lung cancer screening program in Norway.
