Alcohol consumption is costly for society

02.12.2013 - Uncategorized

On behalf of H. Lundbeck, Oslo Economics has analysed the societal costs of alcohol consumption. The analysis shows that the costs amounted to more than NOK 22 billion in 2011. This amount is higher than the government’s income from alcohol tax, which amounted to NOK 17 billion. More than ten per cent of the Norwegian adult population consume alcohol in a harmful way, and the biggest costs are caused by loss in productivity due to work absenteeism. In addition, there are costs related to social problems that are more difficult to quantify.
