We are analysing potential causes of the increase in young persons on disability benefits in Norway. The study is performed in collaboration with The Frisch centre for economic research and on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. As an introduction to the topic, Ole Røgeberg at the Frisch centre has summarised the current literature on mental health among young adults.
Indicators on mental health, as self-reported mental difficulties, diagnosed mental disorders, use of medication and treatment, all indicate that mental health among young adults has worsened in Norway the last ten years. The reasons behind this development and to what extent it can explain the increase in disability benefits is uncertain.
