Oslo Economics was present on a seminar on ex-post merger evaluations at the Norwegian Competition Authority (NCA) in Bergen on March 13th. Elias Braunfels presented preliminary findings on the research project “An ex-post analysis of merger price effects – The case of the TeliaSonera/Tele2 merger in the Norwegian market for mobile telecommunications”. The analysis empirically investigates how prices in the mobile telecom market was affected by TeliaSonera’s acquisition of Tele2, which was approved with remedies in February 2015.
The project contributes to evaluate NCA’s decisions and increase transparency on effects of the merger control. The project also sheds light on how outcomes of mergers correspond to those expected from the ex-ante analysis and provide insights that can be used in future policy decisions.
The research project is financed by “The price regulation fund”, which is managed by the NCA. Oslo Economics has received funding from the fund on two past occasions, both related to ex-ante merger analyses. The first research paper is published in Review of Industrial Organization, and the second is available in NCA’s research paper series.
